Interested in taking one or more of the exams to become a licensed amateur radio operator?
The Metro Amateur Radio Club sponsors FCC amateur radio license exams.
Exams are offered by appointment during the first Tuesday of almost every month. Registration is required (no walk-ins).
The club meets on the first Tuesday of each month at the Lincolnwood Community Center located at 6900 N. Lincoln Avenue, which is just south of Touhy Avenue at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Morse Avenue. Testing is by appointment or reservation ONLY. Testing begins at 6 pm and must be completed by 7:15 (most test-takers do not find time to be an issue).
Testing is available for all three levels of FCC licenses: Technician, General and Extra. Registration is required. Please email

for registration info so that we can be sure to have everything ready for the level of exam you plan to take.
You will need to bring:
- The testing fee of $15, either as exact change, in cash or by check made out to check to "ARRL/VEC."
- 2 forms of ID, at least one of which must have a photo.
- Either your FRN number or your social security number (this is an FCC requirement). Your FRN number is printed on your current license (if you have one) at the very bottom of the wallet card portion of the license.
- If you are upgrading, you must also bring a photocopy of your current license, which will be sent to the FCC along with your paperwork.
- It would be helpful to bring a #2 pencil (to take the exam) and a black pen (to fill out the FCC forms after you pass!).
- Calculators are permitted, but you may be required to demonstrate that your calculator's memories are empty.
